More squad options

Squad

Queensland squad training has been revamped for the next block starting in July, with a half-squad and limited casual squad sessions now available.

Assistant national epee coach Paul Crook says the squads have to cater to Queensland's National High Performance Program athletes.

"These athletes sign contracts requiring them to train with a squad of the best athletes in the state twice a week throughout their annual cycle," Paul says.

But he says squad training can also benefit fencers in all age groups who are preparing for national-level events or who want to compete overseas. but not as a member of the High Performance Program.

It's also a great way for developing fencers to gain confidence as they move from the club environment into competitive fencing.

With this in mind, the next squad block (July - September 2017) will offer the following options:

  • Senior Squad - $320 for 8 rounds, 2 sessions per round
    7 Saturdays (12:00 - 2:00pm) and 9 Wednesdays (6:00pm - 9:00pm)
  • Half Senior Squad - $190 for 8 sessions
Wednesday or Saturday, fencer can attend any session to a maximum of 8
  • Development Squad - $160 for 8 sessions
    8 Saturdays (12:00-2:00pm)
  • Casual Squad - $30 per session to a maximum of three sessions per block

Open circuit results

QFA open 2 podium pic

A small but enthusiastic field took to the strips on Sunday 21st May 2017 in QFA's second open circuit tournament for this year.
Madeleine Andersen dominated the women's events, taking gold in women's epee and sabre and bronze in the foil event.
Despite a reduced training schedule while she completes year 12, Alicia Kwag continued her domination of women's foil, taking gold in that event and claiming silver in sabre.
Emilie Tixeront achieved a personal best with a silver medal in the women's epee.
After losing in the T16 in men's epee, Michael Nelson blitzed the field in his 'just-for-fun' events, bagging the silver medal in men's foil and bronze in sabre.
Officials trialled new competition software for the tournament and are pleased with the result, saying Fencing Time proved more user-friendly for new volunteers who are keen to learn how to run competitions.
